Easy Home Updates Which Can Make a Huge Difference

It is very easy to become bored of the appearance of your home – don’t worry, we’re all guilty of it. Nobody wants to redecorate every time your tastes change as this is both time-consuming and expensive, so it’s so important to look for easy updates that can make an enormous difference to your house without the factor of both time and money being an issue.

Sites such as Pinterest or Instagram are a wealth of knowledge on this front, and it’s so easy to caught up in hours and hours of looking over images to inspire your projects – so to make things easier for you, here are few ideas to aid your décor plans.

Lamps
Lighting plays an enormous role in ambience and by simply adding in a new lamp or two then you can easily transform the whole look and feel of the room. It’s important to do a little research into which lighting would work best for which room – for example, in the living room it’s important to steer clear of stark bright lights and instead opt for a warm and welcoming ambience, whilst this kind of lighting would feel completely out of place in say your kitchen or bathroom. Vintage light bulbs are growing ever-popular too, so if you’re looking for something a little different, then why not consider a mixing a marble based lamp with a filament bulb for a really striking finish?

Rugs
Lay down a new rug and the entire room will feel much different – it may sound like an obvious solution, but sometimes the screamingly obvious can be the thing we tend to overlook. If you’re short on space or are looking to make a huge difference to a room with quite a narrow floorspace, then consider a runner, rather than trying to squeeze in their larger counterpart. One of the best things about runner-rugs is that there are endless materials and colours or patterns to choose from and can add a pop of colour to a difficult to fill, narrow corridor. If you’re looking for some inspiration, then retailers such as Cox & Cox often have some great offerings.

Plantlife
Adding plants around your house is a superb way to inject colour and life into the home – plus they are known to have many health benefits. Sure, flowers in a vase are an obvious choice, but you could also opt for something with a bit more character like the ever-popular cactus or even a bonsai tree. Alternatively, why not start your own herb garden? Don’t worry if your home is a flat or has little in the way of green space, herbs can often be grown inside and out, or you could even attach a window box or start a mini veg garden in pots on your balcony – there are plenty of options, and if you do opt to grow them indoors, then it will come in super handy when it comes to cooking.

Artwork
The greatest way to change a room and add personality is through artwork. Paintings, photographs and sculptures are all good options, and if you already have artwork that you enjoy looking at, simply moving it into a different room or area can make a surprisingly big difference. If you’re not confident in your layout skills and need a little helping hand in this department, then why not lay out a large white sheet of paper on the floor and arrange your frames on this before you start hammering nails in to your paint work. It may sound a little odd, but it will really help you to visualise what will work best next to each other without causing any damage to your walls.
Cushions
Cushions are easy to overlook, but by simply adding in new cushions or replacing your old cushion covers, you can add a whole new look to your living area.  Why not try mixing up shapes and sizes to give your room a bit more depth – or even adding a bold new colour into the mix. This works especially well if your current colour scheme is fairly neutral and can change the identity of lounge without costing you a fortune. If you’re on a budget, why not whip out the sewing machine and try your hand at sewing yourself some new cushion covers in your dream fabric.

Mirrors
Mirrors are considered to be somewhat of a secret weapon when it comes to interior design, and a new mirror can make a room look much bigger and brighter in an instant. Vintage shops and carboot sales are a fantastic place to pick up a mirror at a much lower price than new – look out for the ever popular art deco style as this can add elegance and glamour to almost any room.

These are just a few of the quick and easy ways in which you can update and change the look of your home without having to do anything drastic or spend your hard earned cash on items you may not even like a year or so down the line. Again, sites such as Pinterest and Instagram are great for further inspiration, but be sure not to get sucked into that Pinterest-blackhole, trust me – it’s easily done!
