What really happens when you sleep, and when you don't

Sleep is something that Mothers just can’t get enough of. Pregnancy can affect your comfort in bed, especially if you are forced to sleep in a position you’re not used to. Then you need to slot into a newborn’s sleep pattern that is more like napping. Of course, if you have other children to care for at the same time, even those short bursts are impossible.

Sleep is the answer to most of life’s problems. Worried about a decision? Sleep on it. Got a cold? Sleep it away. Our brains are busy working out the day’s events and filing them away correctly for later recall. And our bodies are regenerating, healing, and even growing while we are snoozing away. Sleep is the most important element of good health.

So how can you ensure the precious little sleep you get is high quality? Start with your bed. Something like a John Ryan By Design King size mattress could give you the space and comfort you need. Place it in a room with no light or noise that can interrupt your dream cycles. While you might not need much to fall into a deep slumber, having a routine before closing your eyes is also a good idea.


If you don’t have time for a bath each night, then cleanse and tone your face. Wash your hands, and put on your nightwear. These actions send all the right signals to your brain. They let it know that now is a good time to rest. Perhaps you read a chapter of a favourite book? Maybe you drink a cup of warm milk? Stick to the same things every night to ensure you drift off quickly.

It is during our sleep cycles that our hormones start to get excited. The ones you may be most familiar with are the fertility hormones. A lack of sleep may be responsible for problems with fertility over time. Our immune system, including the cancer killer TNF, are all restored while we are asleep. Without regular quality sleep, we can be lacking in TNF by up to a third, and our immune system overall can be weakened.

Wondering why having a baby is making you look so much older than you used to? There really is some truth in getting your beauty sleep. The cells renew and regenerate throughout our body, including our skin. Getting plenty of time to rest really does help us to stay looking younger. Other physical signs of sleep deprivation include dizziness, light-headedness and low energy.

You may also find it difficult to concentrate and have a poor memory. You may find you have a very low mood and become overly emotional. Feeling like you can’t cope is quite common when you regularly fall short of your slumber quota. Sadly, for most new Mothers, there is little you can do in those crucial early months.

It is so important to get as much rest as you can when your nights are regularly disturbed. If it isn’t practical in your current lifestyle or schedule, consider changing it for the sake of your health. After all, there are some pretty important people who need you at your best.
