Life is hectic for most of us at the moment. If we’re not working, we’re taking care of the kids. And while they’re sleeping we’re cleaning up the house and making sure the laundry is all done. We poor Mums know no rest sometimes. But it is actually incredibly important that we do take some time out for ourselves each day.
Mothers work tirelessly to ensure their family are happy and healthy. After all, Moms are awesome! But we are in danger of burnout if we don’t take it easy once in awhile. Without regular rests and relaxation, our immune system can weaken. We can become ill, stressed, and of no use to our family at all. It’s better to treat yourself daily to avoid having to take a big break due to exhaustion or fatigue.
The other day I spent some time cleaning out all the leaves in my garden. It made me realize just how much I miss being out in the yard or garden, despite it being freezing! The satisfaction of something like growing food and flowers is enormous. This simple pleasure helps me relax and unwind. I only need to be out there for twenty minutes to nurture my plants. But that short time can help me feel refreshed, rested and ready for the next task in my day.
Plenty of people, especially Finnish people, love a sauna at the end of the day. I can understand why! Sitting in home saunas gives us all a few minutes break from everything. We can sweat out all the toxins, and let the heat relax our tired muscles. If you’re keen to detox, then a sauna could be one of the best ways to do it. This is especially true if you’re like me and short of good quality produce for smoothies. A cold shower washes your worries away, leaving you feeling rejuvenated.
I love being out in the fresh air. Walking is something our bodies need to do to stay healthy. A brisk walk on a windy day really does the clear the cobwebs and focusses the mind. A gentle walk on a warm spring day stimulates the senses with the scents of flowers and cut grass. You can get the heart pumping just enough to improve your circulation, feeding fresh oxygen to all those body parts that need it.
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I only wish I had more time to get through the books I’m so keen to read! Sitting quietly alone with only the pages for company is a really good way to get a break when you need it. You can shut out the whole world for half an hour and catch up with a chapter or two. I love how my body is quiet and still but my mind is stimulated by the craftsmanship of my favorite author.
No matter how busy you are, always take that twenty to thirty minutes a day. We all need a little time out just to regroup. And looking after yourself should be more of a priority than you often let it be! Take a break right now.
